Crisis: A Letter from Br. Don for the Election

Dear friends, colleagues, spiritual directors, seekers, therapists and concerned citizens:
I am writing this letter not particularly spiritually centered, but deeply disturbed. We are less than 100 days away from the most important election in our life time, possible as significant as Lincoln or Roosevelt. I am angered by a War of Choice driven by power and oil wealth, led by a racist, misogynist toxic masculine person in charge of the Department of War.
There are evil deeds being performed on our streets with no accountability. Being from Maine, I actually know the street corner where a young man was murdered going to work, shot in the face in his car, dragged out dead and handcuffed on the street. We are numbed by normalizing indiscriminate arrest most not criminals but are people legally working the system to become citizens. Our barber from the Bronx has “disappeared” this summer and no one knows where he is and the shop is for rent. Ware houses are being transformed into holding cages for families. Meanwhile, individuals of family member of the White House through insider information and illegal structures are making billions through graft and corruption. The very heavens must cry out in the name of the poor and powerless. Ordinary and lower middle-class citizens are deprived of health care, child care, assistance with food and decent housing.
I have been studying, teaching, reflecting on the American shadow for years from a Jungian-Christian model. We are at a critical juncture where the far right has been emboldened to use government to destroy government, to rule operantly, building a grand ARCH to celebrate the takeover. Each year is more brutal and the silence permits the oppression to deepen.
The prayer of the Magnificat is silenced for the poor get poorer, the rich gain in power and the truth is violated more profoundly. Where is the Living Christ in us emerging as prophecy? Where is the voice of John the Baptist exposing the evil and wicked deeds of the king and pointing the light into the darkness? Where is the turning over of tables in the temple by the scandal that we have no money for child care and yet we support a form of capitalism for a trillionaire to cut the needs of the poorest on the planet as it burns from global warming.
I have been trying to articulate this reality for years as this nightmare blooms and expands around us.
Here are some suggestions hopefully to engage
1.Re-energize yourself with pertinent material for reflection and conversation
2.Send suggestions to people that are lulled into acquiescence and passivity too discouraged to vote
3.Send material to those regretful maga supporters for a new for conversion
4.Bring people in for conversation and choices that have to be made before the election.
